Basically, a Prize Play consists of standing in the middle of a circle of sword fighters and taking on each one individually. The first round generally takes about 20 minutes. That's 20+ minutes of full on sparring. Keep in mind, you're wearing all your equipment and protective gear, not to mention battling 85+ heat and humidity all at the same time. Believe me when I say, I felt like I was going to pass out towards the end. But, I pulled through and made it to the second round. Oh, yes, there's a second round of death awaiting you after enduring the first.
The second is where your opponents take up a weapon other than a longsword and attack you in a method you're not use to defending yourself against. To my surprise, I actually really enjoyed it, despite thinking I'd die of heat stroke in the middle of it.
There were some seriously funny moments while I sparred. At one point a fellow swordsmen grabbed my sword from me but I was able to recover fast, and grabbed his sword at the same time. We ended up fighting to the finish with each other's swords. Another time, my instructor chose to spar against me with the lance. I'd never ever come up against it before and, after seeing the last episode of Game of Thrones, I didn't really relish being beaten by it. My mode of defense was to grab it from him, which would have been awesome, only he never left go. There were some good laughs had as we grappled over it.
All in all, a fantastic time! And because I survived, I was awarded an Official TSG Patch. BEST SATURDAY EVER.
Below, I've added a photo where, as you can see, I died at the hands of the Montante. I suppose you can't beat 'em all! ;)
